A baby pileated woodpecker flew out of the marsh woods and onto their telephone pole. After awhile he went inside. He’s much shorter than his parents. I love that I can lie here in my tipi and watch them like that!

An undated artist's rendering of the Zosterops somadikartai, or Togian white-eye. The small greenish bird that has been playing hide-and-seek with ornithologists on a remote Indonesian island since 1996 was declared a newly discovered species on March 14, 2008 and promptly recommended for endangered lists.

In this photo provided by Hadoram Shirihai, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, a Beck's petrel is seen in the summer of 2007 in the Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea. The pale-bellied bird species last seen in the 1920s and long thought to be extinct has been rediscovered near Papua New Guinea.

Hoopoe [Jan. 15th, 2008|01:13 pm]

The Hoopoe is 25–29cm long, with a 44–48cm wingspan. This black, white and pink bird is quite unmistakable, especially in its erratic flight, which is like that of a giant butterfly. The crest is erectile, but is mostly kept closed. It walks on the ground like a starling.

The song is a trisyllabic "oop-oop-oop", which gives rise to its English and scientific names.

The nest is in a hole in a tree or wall. Like those of its relatives the kingfishers, the nest tends to contain copious amounts of faeces and smell very foul as a protection against predators. Nesting hoopoes are capable of squirting fecal matter at intruders.

Question [Jan. 15th, 2008|11:55 am]
Bird World - For the Love of Birds

Hey all,
I'm an interior design student, and as part of a project I'm having to design an aviary/garden space. It's about 100 feet in diameter and 40 feet high. The question is, what type of aviary should I make. My team wants to design a zen garden, so are there any birds that would be good in a zen garden?

And, I wish I didn't have to do an aviary as I don't really want the birds to be stuck in a cage.. but I don't have much of a choice. I know basically nothing about birds, so I'm asking you guys what types of birds wouldn't super hate being stuck in that size of a cage.

Thanks!
